{"id":302,"date":"2009-07-13T15:24:07","date_gmt":"2009-07-13T22:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knuetter.com\/christian\/?p=302"},"modified":"2009-07-13T15:24:07","modified_gmt":"2009-07-13T22:24:07","slug":"an-addendum-to-getting-in-shape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.knuetter.com\/christian\/2009\/07\/13\/an-addendum-to-getting-in-shape\/","title":{"rendered":"An addendum to getting in shape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago I wrote about using metrics and data as a means of measuring and motivating the effort to get in shape.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-img zemanta-action-dragged\" style=\"margin: 1em; display: block;\">\n<div>\n<dl class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 190px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/66458073@N00\/2462934901\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Nescaf\u00e9\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2197\/2462934901_e7e569bd2e_m.jpg\" alt=\"Nescaf\u00e9\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd zemanta-img-attribution\" style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Image by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/66458073@N00\/2462934901\">mlcastle<\/a> via Flickr<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>One morning as I was grabbing a coffee from the local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peets.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peet&#8217;s<\/a> I saw they had a nutritional l information card available, listing out the caloric, fat, and other nutritional information about their offerings.\u00a0 I think this is great.<\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;m pretty sure that they are required to provide this by law but I was still impressed that it was available right there on the counter and the information is provided in a very clear, easy to digest (pun slightly intended) fashion.<\/p>\n<p>I usually only stop in for a coffee in the morning, so I&#8217;m not too concerned about the nutritional information there (I get a half decaf so I&#8217;m not worried about the caffeine either).\u00a0 What I am interested in is the foods that they provide.\u00a0 Peet&#8217;s is my go-to place when I&#8217;m out of milk, etc., and have to grab breakfast in the morning before heading in to work.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve often wondered: am I better off with the bran muffin, the blueberry muffin, the currant scone, or should I skip this and have more protein like option of an egg on a muffin over at the Lee&#8217;s Deli.<\/p>\n<p>According to the guide (which for obvious reasons doesn&#8217;t provide insight into Lee&#8217;s food), the scone gets me 480 calories (as does the blueberry muffin) while the whole wheat honey bran muffin gets only 390 calories.\u00a0 So there&#8217;s not a whole heck of a lot of difference (and all fall within a reasonable number of calories for me, if that&#8217;s all I&#8217;m having for breakfast).\u00a0 Now fat on the other hand clearly points to the bran muffin, coming in at less than 1\/2 the fat of the other options.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s really interesting to me though is the disparity between the lowfat options and the &#8216;regular.&#8217;\u00a0 Many of the &#8220;low fat&#8221; options have nearly as many calories and in many instances, more fat than some of the &#8216;regular&#8217; items like that bran muffin.<\/p>\n<p>It just shows that it takes time and effort to figure all of this out &#8211; and in the long run it&#8217;s probably worth taking the extra moments to think about what we&#8217;re eating.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; height: 15px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" style=\"border: medium none; float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/pixy.gif?x-id=4a9eea02-8d9c-4d6f-8df9-c04f8cdc29b6\" alt=\"\" \/><span class=\"zem-script more-related pretty-attribution\"><script src=\"http:\/\/static.zemanta.com\/readside\/loader.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago I wrote about using metrics and data as a means of measuring and motivating the effort to get in shape.
