{"id":209,"date":"2009-04-07T10:42:29","date_gmt":"2009-04-07T17:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knuetter.com\/christian\/?p=209"},"modified":"2009-04-07T10:42:29","modified_gmt":"2009-04-07T17:42:29","slug":"high-speed-trains-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.knuetter.com\/christian\/2009\/04\/07\/high-speed-trains-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"High-speed trains in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-213\" title=\"highspeed\" src=\"http:\/\/www.knuetter.com\/christian\/wp-content\/uploads\/highspeed.png\" alt=\"highspeed\" width=\"512\" height=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I am a huge fan of traveling by train.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up outside of New York, we had an extensive rail network that we could take advantage of.<\/p>\n<p>After college I took my first large (more than 1-month) trip abroad -the fairly typical Eurpoe by Eurorail.\u00a0 I loved how the trains there could get you into just about anywhere you wanted to go.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, traveling to Japan I was amazed by the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Shinkansen\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shinkansen\">Shinkansen<\/a> service and its ability to swiftly carry us across the country.<\/p>\n<p>All that said, for years I commuted to work via train here in California and the experience was pretty poor.\u00a0 The train took much longer than driving and I needed to drive to the train station (or double my commute time by taking the bus to the train station) and I had to have\u00a0 a shuttle take me from the station to the office and back.\u00a0 And when the train broke down, it really left you stranded.\u00a0 I arrived 4 hours late for work one day.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why this map makes me excited.\u00a0 It depicts the high-speed rail systems that are proposed over the coming years here in the states.\u00a0 With the right experience, train travel can be so much better than the alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>A few examples?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How about departing and arriving into the heart of the city instead of commuting out to the airport.\u00a0 Have you ever tried to get to O&#8217;Hare during rush hour?<\/li>\n<li>What about an overnight trip from New York to Atlanta with a comfortable bed.\u00a0 Leave the city after a nice dinner and drinks and arrive for breakfast after a good night&#8217;s sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Downtown San Francisco to Los Angeles in 2 hours?<\/li>\n<li>Boston to New York in speed and comfort &#8211; even during a wicked Blizzard or Nor&#8217;Easter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope the system gets the funding that it needs and that Americans realize the benefits and convenience of an efficient, comfortable rail network.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/pixy.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><span class=\"zem-script more-related\"><script src=\"http:\/\/static.zemanta.com\/readside\/loader.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a huge fan of traveling by train.
