{"id":191,"date":"2009-03-16T20:05:10","date_gmt":"2009-03-17T03:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knuetter.com\/christian\/?p=191"},"modified":"2009-03-31T09:05:08","modified_gmt":"2009-03-31T16:05:08","slug":"panasonic-g10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.knuetter.com\/christian\/2009\/03\/16\/panasonic-g10\/","title":{"rendered":"Canon G10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I really like my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/518489-REG\/Nikon_25432_D300_SLR_Digital_Camera.html\/BI\/2772\/KBID\/3696\" target=\"_blank\">Nikon Digital SLR<\/a> (currently a D300) but from time-to-time, a smaller camera just comes in handy.<\/p>\n<p>Even back in the days of film I always owned a smaller point-and-shoot (my favorite was the Olympus Stylus non-zoom), and when I moved to digital, the point-and-shoot was the obvious place to start.\u00a0 Primarily I use the smaller camera for snapshots and these are the images that are less-likely to get printed out, and therefore don&#8217;t need the fine optics of the larger SLR.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve owned several smaller point-and-shoot (p&amp;s) digital cameras over the years and for the past few I&#8217;ve opted for a slightly larger footprint.\u00a0 The small p&amp;S is great for sticking in your pocket but the lenses often leave much to be desired (why I liked the Olympus film camera) and their controls are often buried behind menus.<\/p>\n<p>Several years ago, before I owned a digital SLR, I was intrigued by the Canon G-series of cameras.\u00a0 They&#8217;re more the size of rangefinder cameras and they have the same aesthetics and similar control layouts.\u00a0 I thought this would be a great form-factor for a digital camera, but alas, the SLR\u00a0has once again reigned supreme and has become the defacto pro-level (and &#8216;prosumer-&#8216; level) camera design.<\/p>\n<p>But, what I&#8217;ve found is that I no longer value the diminutive size of the point-and-shoot camera and prefer the control and handling of the larger &#8216;rangefinder&#8217; style larger cameras.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-img zemanta-action-dragged\" style=\"margin: 1em; display: block;\">\n<div>\n<dl class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 212px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Canon_G7_mg_2529.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Front view of PowerShot G7\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/8\/81\/Canon_G7_mg_2529.jpg\/202px-Canon_G7_mg_2529.jpg\" alt=\"Front view of PowerShot G7\" width=\"202\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd zemanta-img-attribution\" style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Image via <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Canon_G7_mg_2529.jpg\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>So it is that I no longer carry around (or even purchase) small point-and-shoot\u00a0cameras but instead backup my SLR with the larger Canon G-series.<\/p>\n<p>My first was a Canon G7 (several generations past the G3 that originally cought my eye).\u00a0 I used that camera for several trips and on many adventures before it succumbed to a spot on the image sensor.\u00a0 With a relatively high repair cost looming, and a newer model (with RAW shooting mode) available, I made the switch to the latest G10 model.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/583955-REG\/Canon_2663B001_PowerShot_G10_Digital_Camera.html\/BI\/2772\/KBID\/3696\" target=\"_blank\">Canon G10<\/a> has not disappointed.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about the same size as the older G7, the battery lasts as long or longer, the controls are even better laid out, and the image quality remains excellent.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest complaint I have is the low-light capabilities of the camera.\u00a0 Anything above ISO 400 is way too grainy.\u00a0 Thankfully it has a relatively fast lens and some image stabilization so I can often work around that.\u00a0 And, when compared to a point-and-shoot, it&#8217;s definitely no worse.<\/p>\n<p>So this camera will continue to be my go-to-camera in situations where I don&#8217;t want to bring my hulking SLR &#8211; quick day trips, weekend jaunts, as a carry everywhere day-to-day or on vacations, and even backcountry trips where I don&#8217;t want the extra weight of the SLR.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/pixy.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><span class=\"zem-script more-related\"><script src=\"http:\/\/static.zemanta.com\/readside\/loader.js\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I really like my Nikon Digital SLR (currently a D300) but from time-to-time, a smaller camera just comes in handy.
